There are over 600 million websites, 500 million tweets are sent every day and approximately 2.4 billion people have access and go on the internet. Our expectations of how we access information and share information are different from previous generations. Technological advancements such as the internet, mobile devices, and software have created new methods and new demands from the audience. The internet and the creation of social media have changed how we work, the way we live and communicate, and how we make and maintain friendships. Technology has had a large impact on our culture and society. We rely heavily on social media and texts to communicate, and less on in-person face-to-face, we stream content and downloading music rather than using old methods. Our expectation as consumers has driven changes in technology. We demand that new tech be developed in order to find new ways of doing things. We want our information now and expect it to be available where and when we want. Have these changes improved our lives or has it made our society more isolated? Is our expectation unrealistic? Should we rely primarily on technology to receive and send information? All these questions can be answered yes and no. We are an evolving society that relies on technology for everything we do daily. Today communication professionals need to have the ability to collect data quantitatively and qualitatively, have the knowledge of the tools used to evaluate data, and understand the different communication theories. They need to have the knowledge and skills to navigate both methods, currently, 76% of advanced economies and 45% of emerging economies own a smartphone, in addition to this 67% of advanced economies use social media, and even 49% of emerging use social media (B, 2020). Technological advancements have changed how communication professionals interact and how consumer trends have changed to be more demanding on these professionals. New digital tools have been developed providing professionals with new devices, programs, and platforms to use to engage the audience.
